MMS and SQL Server-MSDE.
This article was previously published as ID#26901

Summary:
Every MMS 4.7 server must have on it an installation of either MSDE 1.0 (Microsoft Data Engine) or SQL Server 7.0. MMS 4.7 uses the database for 3 purposes: the policy directory, the event log, and the security database (certificates). This technote discusses general issues regarding the MMS database, eg, supported versions, etc.

Detailed Information:
MMS comes with MSDE. When MMS is installed, MSDE 1.0 is also automatically installed. MSDE is a stripped down version of SQL Server, and supplies only basic database functionality (eg, there is no Enterprise Manager application, and no OLAP components). Use of MSDE by MMS is transparent to the user and MMS administrator. There is no extra license required for using MSDE with MMS.

MSDE can be upgraded to full SQL Server 7. A separate license from Microsoft is required for SQL Server 7.

MMS 4.7 does not support SQL Server 2000.

MMS 4.7 users can obtain a SQL Server 2000 license from Microsoft, and run SQL Server 7 under it (Microsoft recognizes that not all 3rd party apps support SQL Server 2000 yet).

You can install all SQL Server service packs on MSDE. We recommend SP3. We do not support SP2. The last known link to download SP3 is:

http://www.microsoft.com/sql/downloads/sp3.asp.

You can not have several MMS 4.7 boxes accessing a central SQL Server; every 4.7 box requires its own installation of MSDE or SQL Server 7.

You can not run MSDE on a multiprocessor machine.

Resolution:
MSDE is installed with MMS. See SQL Server 7 for SQL Server 7 installation.

To install SP3, just close all applications and run the installation .exe file.
