Spaces removed from subject header - Virus Manager CLEAN STAMP

Spaces removed from subject header - Virus Manager CLEAN STAMP
This article was previously published as ID#26916

Summary:
MMS removes the first space character from the subject of all messages passed through the server. For example, the subject:
test message number 1
is changed to:
testmessage number 1
after being routed through MMS.

Detailed Information:
This problem is a side effect of the MMS CLEAN STAMP feature. By default the clean stamp specified under Virus Manager -> Properties -> Clean Stamp is " [CLEAN STAMP] "
If this entry is changed to just a space character, MMS will remove the first space from the subject line.

The reason that this happens is that MMS will not add the [CLEAN STAMP] more than once for a message, and likewise, won't leave the [CLEAN STAMP] in the subject for forwarded or replied to messages that already contain that stamp and may no longer be clean from viruses. For this reason, MMS will first strip the first instance of this string from the subject line, and then, if a Clean Stamp policy is in place, re-add the [CLEAN STAMP] after confirming the message is clean. This feature protects recipients from receiving messages that contain a Clean Stamp that was not added by MMS. For example a user can not spoof a [CLEAN STAMP] by simply adding that phrase to the subject of the email.
If the Clean Stamp string is simply a space character or other common character, MMS will remove that character from the original subject.

NOTE: A clean stamp policy is not required for the above to take affect, a simple virus manager policy will generate the same behavior.

Resolution:
The resolution is to add a descriptive Clean Stamp string in the following location in the MMS configuration utility:
Virus Manager -> Properties -> Clean Stamp. The default is [CLEAN STAMP]
If you wish to disable the Clean Stamp string from being checked, you should uncheck the "add this "Clean Stamp" text to the subject" checkbox in the location above.
