This article was previously published as ID#26413

Summary:
Network Associates has end of life'd older versions of the virus scan engine used by MMS. Installation of new pattern files for use with these older engines may cause MMS errors or failed detection of viruses.
The most current Virus Engine supported by Tumbleweed should always be used.

The following note was posted on the MMS Support technical bulletin.

Detailed Information:
Warning for customers using older versions of MMS

According to Network Associates, the 4.0.50 and earlier Virus Engines will cease to function properly from approximately May 2001 with all future virus definition files (DATs).

!! This means that older MMS servers may not detect viruses starting in May !!

These older versions of the virus engine have been end-of-lifed by NAI, and should be considered to be obsolete.

Customers using MMS versions older then 4.5 should plan on upgrading prior to May 2001.
Customers using MMS version 4.5 should either upgrade, or verify they have the 4.0.70 or later virus engine.

To confirm the virus engine version on your MMS server:

Find the file McScan32.dll in the installation directory of your MMS server.
Right click the file and select "Properties"
Select the Version tab and read the version
Note: if there is no version tab, you have an old version of the scan engine.

This information is also available from Virus Manager -> Properties on versions 4.5 and later.

Virus Engines shipped with MMS versions:
4.3 (8028) and earlier has 4.0.20
4.3 (9002) has 4.0.35
4.5 (3006) has 4.0.50
4.5 (3010 - 3012) has 4.0.70

4.7 (2007) has 4.1.10
