Registry Replication with IME on Microsoft Cluster

Registry Replication with IME on Microsoft Cluster
This article was previously published as ID#30251

Summary:
When modifying any IME configuration on an IME cluster running on Microsoft Cluster Services based on the IME Best Practices Guide, registry values are replicated. This behavior is intentional and is required in order to keep the IME configuration stored locally on each server's registry synchronized between both nodes of the IME cluster.

On side effect of registry replication is the IME cluster service will cache registry information, preventing configuration changes made through a registry editor such as regedit.exe or regedt32.exe.

Symptom:
When modifying a configuration setting on an IME server, a change will appear to take place in the registry, but when your IME Cluster Group is brought back online, the change will disappear and revert back to the previous value.

Detailed Information:
Microsoft Cluster Services keeps its own cache of the replicated registry key and subkeys. When changing one of these values, the cluster will overwrite any changes made by an external source, such as regedit.exe.

Resolution:
Rebooting both nodes of the IME Cluster will allow registry changes to be resaved, but this can be time-consuming, especially when troubleshooting a configuration issue.

It may be beneficial to temporarily disable registry replication while troubleshooting.

To Disable Registry Replication

  1. Start Cluster Administrator.
  2. Click on the Resources folder.
  3. Right-click on the IMENamingService resource and select Properties
  4. Click the Registry Replication tab.
  5. Select the key SOFTWARE\Tumbleweed\Server and click Delete

To Re-Enable Registry Repliation

  1. Start Cluster Administrator.
  2. Click on the Resources folder.
  3. Right-click on the IMENamingService resource and select Properties
  4. Click the Registry Replication tab.
  5. In the Root registry key, enter SOFTWARE\Tumbleweed\Server. Click OK.
