In the "Notif high water mark reached" message, what does the following number represent?

Problem

Occasionally the following warning message appears in the log:

114 SUP W N-HIGH-WM Notif high water mark reached(X)

What does the value in parentheses (X) represent, and is it directly related to any of the notif configuration options?

Resolution

The value represents the number of pending exit frames. It is not directly calculable from the configuration options, but if it occurs frequently, it is a warning that notif is not handling exits fast enough. In that case, the recommendation is to increase the number of notif processes (notif_process_to_start and notif_process_started_max).
