Unable to connect to the DNS server

Unable to connect to the DNS server

Summary:

Getting errors 101 and 105 in the MMS event log. Messages read:

Error 101 - Unable to connect to the DNS server. Please check your configuration.
Error 105 - Internal failure during DNS query for the following recipients: user@domain.com

Symptom:

No valid DNS servers are listed under SMTP Relay properties -> general tab -> advanced section.

Detailed Information:

During installation MMS will populate the DNS field with the DNS servers listed under TCP/IP properties->DNS tab in the Network Properties configuration window for Windows NT.

If this information is not available when MMS is installed, the DNS field under SMTP relay properties may be empty.

Resolution:

Make sure that there are DNS servers listed under SMTP Relay properties -> general tab -> advanced section and verify that they are valid DNS servers. Multiple servers are space delimited.

If MMS does not use DNS, make sure that DNS is not selected under either the Routing tab or the Domains tab for SMTP relay properties.
