Tracing messages via the event log (4.7)
Summary:
What is the easiest way to 'track' an e-mail through MMS?
Symptom:
There are events in the log, but they are mixed with other events. How do I separate them?
Resolution:
Here's a good way to track a message through MMS. This assumes you know the e-mail address and/or subject involved. This also assumes your Event log settings are set to Normal or Trace logging levels.
Say you want to track a message to joe@companyA.com with an attachment file1.xls
1. In MMS Configuration, right click on Event Log and select New Filter, and give the filter a name (i.e. Locate Message)
2. Right click on the "Locate Message" filter, and choose Edit Filter.
3. In the filter properties, leave the default settings, and in the bottom right-hand field (Event Details Text Contains), enter the name of the attachment you wish to track (in this case file1.xls)
4. Apply the filter by left clicking on it or hitting F5, and you will see just the events which contain the text string you entered.
5. Find the event which corresponds to the message you wish to track. This will probably be a 240 event:
Date: (date)
From: (sender address)
To: joe@companya.com
Subject: (subject)
Message size: (size in bytes)
Attachments:
file1.xls
6. With this event highlighted, expand the column for Event Instance ID so you can see the entire ID for this event. You will need to type it into the next filter.
7. With the event still highlighted, right click on Event Log and add a New Filter, and name it (i.e. Track Message)
8. With the previous event still highlighted, right click on the "Track Message" filter and Edit Filter.
9. Leave the default settings, and in the second field from the bottom (event instance id contains) enter the event instance ID of the event you still have highlighted. Note: ONLY ENTER THE PORTION OF THE ID BEFORE THE FIRST DASH (-)
10. Apply the new filter, and you will see all events for the specific ID you entered. In most cases, this will be all events for one particular message.
This enables you to track the one message from start to finish.
Additional Info:
Note - for step 3, you can enter a message subject, or a sender or recipient e-mail address rather than an attachment name.
