“Could Not Log You On. Your Credentials Could Not Be Verified” is an error message that appears when attempting to logon with a Smart Card. When a user logs on with their smart card, a chain of trust is verified between the domain controller, the issuing CA, the workstation and the certificate installed on the smart card. The credentials could not be verified is a general PKI logon error relating to the chain of trust and could appear because of a number of reasons including;
  • The Domain Controller has not been issued a valid certificate
  • The root certificate of the CA is missing/not valid on the client workstation
  • The certificate on the smart card is not valid for smart card logon
  • Unable to contact the CRL
