Problem

Does CFT v3 support hardware based data compression using zEDC ?

Resolution

There is nothing implemented in CFT version 3 for z/os in regards of zEDC but if managed from a SMS dataclass it will be 'transparent' for CFT.

When receiving, you can select a SMS dataclass at FNAME level if needed; See Specifying additional DFSMS parameters in Installation and Operation guide for Transfer CFT 3.1.3 for z/os.

zEDC operate at I/O level so it is transparent for the application for reading or writing.

Of course, beside SMS, it doesn't prevent editors to add the zEDC feature in their products if needed.

In regards of MFT, where the compression primary interest is to minimize the data sent over the network, it is not the purpose of zEDC that is supposed to acess/transfer the data decompressed.

A compressed file sent compressed or compressing a file before sending is always preferred.

Using zEDC online to compress data will need a product integration.

It can be used offline and automated, using processing scripts. (compress before send and decompress on the receiver side)
