Cannot see zIIP CPU usage

Problem

ziipsup option turned on (in ..UPARM(CNFENV))

Message: CCFT05I Ziip offload is initialized (proof of zIIP processor(s) is available on the LPAR where CFT is launched)

When no zIIP processor is available, you will get: CCFT06W No available Ziip processors for offload

Start a PeSIT transfer with a large file, compression enabled and record length over 1024

Cannot see zIIP CPU usage

Resolution

IBM® z Integrated Information Processor (zIIP) is a dedicated specialty engine designed to operate asynchronously with the general processors in a mainframe.

IBM does not impose IBM software charges on zIIP capacity, except when additional general purpose CP capacity is used.

So, because this zIIP processing is not accounted by IBM and depending of the system's audit settings, zIIP CPU consumption may not be displayed and looks like that it's usage is null.

Details about zIIP usage are available from RMF.

Output samples are available from this link: https://www.ibm.com/support/knowledgecenter/SSLTBW_2.4.0/com.ibm.zos.v2r4.erbb500/procu.htm)

To measure the gain in using zIIP processing with CFT for a particular transfer, you can do the same transfer twice (with and then without the zIIP feature, using a large file with PeSIT compression and LRECL > 1024 to ensure it will make use of the zIIP processing) and then check the difference in the EXCP-Cnt and CPU-Time
