Creating HostGroups

Since the HostGroup is an optional object, no previous steps are mandatory. If you do not define a HostGroup, all Hosts and Servers that you define will be attached to the root HostGroup.

  1. In the Topography workbench, select File > New > Topography > HostGroup.
  2. Complete the General tab.

    Description

    Name

    Enter a name for this HostGroup. The name you enter here is used to reference a given HostGroup throughout the software.

    You can modify this name directly on the TopographyDiagram.

    Label

    Enter an optional free-text description for this HostGroup.

    Parent HostGroup

    From the drop-down list, select a parent HostGroup for this object. By default, this value is set to the name of the HostGroup that is selected in the left pane when you create the new HostGroup.  

    You can modify this value subsequently.

  3. Use the Atlas tab to display the graphical view of all the Hosts that belong to this HostGroup and move them around.

    Double-click a HostGroup on the graph. The selected HostGroup Atlas tab is displayed. Use the buttons to navigate forwards and backwards between HostGroup Atlas tab.

    Select the object and click on the horizontal toolbar

    Display the default map as the background for the Atlas tab

  4. Complete the Attributes tab to add your own user attributes to the HostGroup.

    1. Click on the toolbar to add a new attribute to the table. The left column displays the attribute name and the right column displays the attribute value.
    2. Position the cursor in the Name field and enter an attribute name. You can enter up to 32 alphanumeric characters.
    3. Position the cursor in the Value field and enter a value. To define multiple possible values for the same attribute: save, delete the value in the Value field, enter the new value and press enter.

    You can then use the Find feature in the Entity Browser to search for objects based on their user attributes. For example, you could search for all objects with the user attribute c = UK. In addition, depending on the Axway product, you can also use an attribute name in a DML expression.

  5. The HostGroup dialog box also comprises the following two optional standard tabs:

After you define a HostGroup, you can define the Host objects that belong to it. You can also use the HostGroup in a TopographyDiagram or an Integration-Services-Diagram.
