Remote admin cannot connect to the server - MMS 4.x

Remote admin cannot connect to the server - MMS 4.x

Summary:

Remote Admin worked previously, but fails now. This is especially common after an upgrade of MMS or after an upgrade of the operating system.

Symptom:

When you attempt to connect to the server, you may get the following error (or a similar one):

Access to the specified server was denied. You do not have sufficient permissions on the remote machine.

Detailed Information:

This can have several UNRELATED causes. Below are several items to check.

Resolution:

1. NT Permissions: Make sure your permissions are specified properly. Both the MMS server and the Remote Admin station should be in the same NT domain, or a trust relationship must be established. Sometimes, adding a local account on the MMS server with the same login/password as the Remote Admin user helps. The Remote Admin user must be a member of the local Administrators group on the MMS server.

2. Faulty upgrade: In many cases, upgrading the remote admin from one version to a higher version is not complete. It is best to uninstall and reinstall the remote admin. There is no need to reinstall on the MMS server.

3. Mismatched versions: Make sure you are using the same version of MMS on both the server and the remote admin. It is also recommended, but not required to use the same build. Do NOT try to use a 4.5 remote admin with a 4.7 server or you risk unexpected results due to a difference in the options in the two versions.

4. RPC and port availability: Remote admin uses RPC to connect to the server. Be sure the server has both the RPC and RPC Locator services running. Also, if a firewall is between the MMS server and the remote admin, make sure port 111 and the ephemeral ports (1024-5000) are open.

5. Windows 2000 service: If the MMS server is on Windows 2000, make sure the Remote Registry Service is running.
