Adding Attributes for directory import from Exchange
Adding Attributes for directory import from Exchange
This article was previously published as ID#22925
Summary:
An administrator may want to upload data from a non-standard field such as
"Custom Attribute 2", or (more common) to filter the upload based on that field.
Detailed Information:
When you do a directory import from Exchange, MMS uses LDAP to look up
the users in the Exchange directory. If you are making an Anonymous connection,
by default, Exchange only makes a subset of fields (attributes) available to LDAP
searches. In order to upload or filter using additional attributes, you will
first need to expose those attributes on the Exchange server.
Note: if you are doing an Authenticated connection, you will not need to manually
expose the custom attributes, but you will still need to define them in MMS.
Resolution:
1. In Exchange Administrator, select the Configuration object, then go to properties for DS Site Configuration.
2. On the Attributes tab, select the attributes you wish to make available via LDAP.
3. Using an LDAP client (such as Outlook or Netscape), look up a user in the Exchange directory.
The user record should now include the new attributes, provided there is data in those fields on
the user record (blank fields will not appear.)
4. When viewing the user record, you may find that the attribute name is different when viewed
with an LDAP client than when entering data on a user record in Exchange admin. For example,
"Custom Attribute 2" in Admin shows up as "Extension-Attribute-2" in LDAP.
5. Once you know the correct LDAP name for an attribute, and have verified that it can be
viewed using an LDAP client, you can use the attribute for uploading or filtering in an
MMS directory import.
